2026 brings a significant milestone for our shelter
Five decades ago, we were founded by a group of women who believed it was possible to create a safe haven for women and children fleeing abuse.

Opening date: July 5, 1976

Since opening our doors, we have served thousands of survivors within our emergency shelter and reached countless more through our crisis line and outreach services.
By the Numbers:
3,800+
survivors have resided at IHO since 1976.
4,800+
dependents have stayed with us.
12 pets
sheltered annually at IHO, on average.
1,019
community clients supported over the past five years alone.

Proud as we are of our history, Interval House of Ottawa is observing its 50th anniversary with mixed feelings.
The crisis we were built to address is still raging.
After years of gradual decline, intimate partner violence (IPV) reported to police in Canada has been on the rise.¹

At the same time, Interval House of Ottawa is still here.
IHO has been sustained by 50 years of courage, dedicated work to heal from abuse, and ceaseless community support.
That is our daily source of hope, and it is profoundly worthy of celebration.
And so, throughout 2026, we will be inviting our community to mark this milestone with us.
We will celebrate hard-fought wins, and deepen the work needed to keep building towards this future:
A community committed to healthy and respectful relationships, free from all violence and abuse.
