Coaching Boys Into Men (CBIM)

As Ottawa’s largest gender-based violence shelter, we’re thrilled to be local champions of the Coaching Boys into Men (CBIM) initiative. This powerful violence prevention and healthy relationships program, designed specifically for coaches to deliver to their young male athletes, is now available to sports leaders across the city of Ottawa.

If you're a coach, or school/sporting organization, passionate about:

  • Creating a supportive culture, where young athletes feel safe to have tough conversations

  • Encouraging the development of athlete-leaders, who embody the values of personal responsibility, respect, and accountability.

  • Ensuring coaches have tools to address unhealthy behaviour, if and when they see it

We’re here to partner with you.

What coaches should know about CBIM:

  • Originally developed by U.S. non-profit Futures Without Violence, this program is evidence-based and entirely free to deliver.

  • It requires a time commitment of just 15 minutes per week — woven into regular team time, no extra meetings required — for a total of 12 coach-led team discussions, using CBIM’s short, structured discussion guides.

  • CBIM covers topics like healthy relationships, consent, mental health, peer pressure, and standing up to harmful behaviours, while being flexible and adaptable to every coach’s unique communication style, and structured to encourage player engagement.

  • Interval House of Ottawa provides all CBIM coach training in one, 2.5-hour session; plus ongoing support and all program materials for coaches to deliver CBIM to their athletes.

  • An adapted version of the CBIM program is available for older age groups (18+), under the program name Coaching Leadership, Equity, and Respect (CLEAR).  We are happy to discuss how to implement this program with post-secondary athletes.

CBIM in Ottawa

After being adopted by thousands of U.S. sports teams, and expanding internationally, CBIM is now being provincially funded for delivery across Ontario by gender-based violence organizations like ours.

Did you know? 1 in 3 Canadian youth with dating experience reporting that they experienced or perpetrated dating violence in the previous year.

At Interval House, we see the CBIM program as a critical tool for our collective work to build a healthier Ottawa.

After a successful local pilot in spring 2025, we are thrilled to be offering the CBIM program to coaches across the city, and specifically, those who are working with boys’ sports teams between Grades 7-12/U12-18 at Ottawa high schools, middle schools and community sports clubs.
